Healing Touch

History of HT (according to HT Program Curriculum)

  • HT is an energy healing therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to enhance, support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and self-healing.
  • HT practitioners use light touch or hands near the body to clear, balance and energize the human energy system in order to promote health and healing for body, mind, emotions and spirit.
  • Healing Touch Program (HTP) was developed by Janet Mentgen, BSN, RN, HNC, HTCP/I, a holistic nurse from Denver, Colorado who practiced and taught energy-based care starting in the 1980s.
  • Janet was actively involved in leadership with the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA). In 1988, Janet was honored as the Holistic Nurse of the Year by AHNA for her outstanding accomplishments in the field of holistic nursing.
  • In 1989, Healing Touch was offered as a pilot program at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and in Gainesville, Florida. In 1990, AHNA began supporting Janet’s privately owned program by offering continuing education contact hours.
  • HTP classes have been taught or practiced internationally in over 30 countries since 1989. While the majority of classes are taught in the United States, there are many classes taught in Canada, Australia, Germany, Sweden and Japan.
