The Spinal Flow Technique, founded by Dr. Carli Axford, is a holistic and intuitive hands-on method that integrates science and philosophy to support the body’s natural healing and optimal functioning. This method is built on the understanding that every human body possesses an innate intelligence—a vital Life Force Energy—that supports growth, repair, and restoration. Just as our heartbeat and digestion occur effortlessly, this inner intelligence knows how to bring the body back into balance.
The spine and nervous system are the primary pathways for this Life Force Energy. However, stress—whether physical, emotional, or chemical—can create blockages within the spine, disrupting the energy flow and leading to discomfort, pain, or illness. The Spinal Flow Technique works by locating and releasing these blockages, allowing energy to flow freely to every cell, organ, and tissue in the body, fostering healing and vitality.
This comprehensive approach enables practitioners to:
Decode the body’s signals, such as pain or illness, and understand their underlying causes.
The technique focuses on 33 access points along the meninges, the protective layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. These access points are key to connecting with the body’s wisdom and activating the flow of Life Force Energy. By facilitating this process, practitioners empower the body to release stress and reconnect with its innate capacity for healing.
The Spinal Flow Technique was created to address the widespread suffering caused by pain, stress, and discomfort. Years of experience have shown that many of these challenges originate in the spine and nervous system, which serve as central hubs for healing. Practitioners work in harmony with the body, guiding it to release blockages and restore balance.Whether addressing headaches, back pain, fatigue, or a general sense of unease, the Spinal Flow Technique offers an effective and transformative path to relief. This practice is a beautiful collaboration between practitioner and client, awakening the body’s natural wisdom and creating space for profound, lasting healing.
The Spinal Flow Technique offers numerous benefits by addressing blockages in the spine and restoring the natural flow of Life Force Energy throughout the nervous system. The body essentially operates through two pathways: the Sympathetic (fight/flight) and the Parasympathetic (rest/relaxation). Chronic stress often keeps people stuck in the Sympathetic state. The Spinal Flow Technique helps shift the body into the healing Parasympathetic state, promoting relaxation and restoration.
The Spinal Flow Technique is suitable for individuals of all ages and backgrounds who are seeking relief from physical pain, emotional stress, or general discomfort.

This gentle, non-invasive approach is ideal for anyone looking to improve their overall health and well-being by reconnecting with their body’s natural healing intelligence.
During a Spinal Flow session, you will lie face down on a massage table with bolsters placed under your pelvis to help position your body for creating the wave. The practitioner will use gentle touch on areas such as your sacrum, coccyx, and cranium. They will identify the best access point—an area of ease in your body—and hold it, allowing your body to naturally initiate the spinal flow.
You may feel the practitioner lightly trace along your spine or apply gentle pressure to your legs and feet to enhance the flow. Your role is to stay connected to your body—relaxed but alert. Avoid falling asleep and try to stay out of your thoughts. If clearing your mind is challenging, simply focus on any sensations or feelings that arise. You may feel the need to move, stretch, shake, take a deep breath, or even experience emotions surfacing.
If emotions or physical responses arise, allow them to flow freely. Whether it’s crying, sighing, shaking, moving, or staying still, let your body do what it needs to do. The goal is to release any energy, stress, or blockages that have been stored in your body. By allowing your brain and body to communicate optimally, the practitioner helps your body’s innate intelligence take over and support its natural healing process.

Many clients feel more relaxed, experience reduced tension, improved sleep, mental clarity, and a deeper connection to their body after the first session. However, healing isn’t always linear, and some may feel temporarily worse as underlying issues surface. This is part of the process, and additional sessions help work through these layers. Spinal Flow is safe and always supports your body’s journey to wellness.
Everyone’s self-healing journey is unique, as it often takes time to address layers of accumulated stress. While some individuals notice significant improvements after just a few sessions, others may require more time to fully heal.
For optimal results, it’s recommended to start with 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks (or more frequently for acute or severe conditions). After this initial phase, the frequency can be reduced to 2 sessions per week, and eventually 1 session per week. Progress is reassessed after every 12 sessions, and the treatment plan is adjusted as needed.
The Spinal Flow Technique is a hands-on approach designed to address pain, illness, and discomfort by identifying and releasing blockages in the spine caused by unresolved stress. What sets this technique apart is its focus on the nervous system and the seven Gateways of the spine. Spinal Flow Practitioners undergo specialized training to understand these areas in depth and to awaken the Spinal Flow, enabling Life Force Energy to flow freely through each vertebra and reach every cell in the body, promoting natural healing and restoration.
The Spinal Flow Technique stands apart from chiropractic care, massage therapy, and Reiki in its unique approach to healing. Unlike chiropractic methods, which often involve spinal adjustments or manipulations, Spinal Flow is a gentle, hands-on technique that focuses on releasing blockages in the spine to restore the natural flow of Life Force Energy through the nervous system. This promotes self-healing without the need for cracking or forceful adjustments.
Compared to massage therapy, which primarily targets muscle tension and relaxation, Spinal Flow goes deeper by addressing the nervous system directly. It works to identify and release stress stored in the spine, enabling the body’s innate intelligence to heal and restore balance.
While Reiki also works with energy and the nervous system, it operates within the body’s energy field without physical contact. In contrast, Spinal Flow combines energy work with direct engagement with the body and spine. Practitioners of Spinal Flow receive extensive training in the nervous system and the seven Gateways of the spine, ensuring a comprehensive approach to facilitating the body’s natural healing processes.
Spinal Energetics primarily works with the body’s energy field without direct physical contact, focusing on shifting energy and balancing the chakras. In contrast, the Spinal Flow Technique combines energy work with direct physical engagement by working hands-on with the body and spine. A key component of the Spinal Flow Technique is the activation of the 7 Gateways of the spine, which are directly connected to the chakras. By touching the body and spine, practitioners awaken the Spinal Flow, allowing Life Force Energy to flow freely through the nervous system, supporting healing and balance on a deeper, physical level.
The Spinal Flow Technique incorporates an energy-healing component, but it also integrates a scientific understanding of the spine and nervous system. This unique combination allows practitioners to support the body’s natural ability to heal itself on both a physiological and energetic level. By addressing blockages in the spine and restoring the flow of Life Force Energy, the technique promotes healing, balance, and overall well-being.
Yes, the Spinal Flow Gateways share similarities with energy systems like Chakras, Meridians, and Energy Centers, as they all recognize the body as an energetic being. Blocked energy in any of these systems can lead to pain and dis-ease. However, the Spinal Flow Technique is rooted in the nervous system, making it distinct in its approach.
Spinal Flow acknowledges and works with both the sympathetic and parasympathetic states of the nervous system. A key part of the technique is helping the body transition out of the fight-or-flight response into a “Healing State,” where the parasympathetic nervous system is activated. This state allows the body to access its innate wisdom and natural ability to heal. Additionally, the technique’s focus on the spine and its connections includes an understanding of the vagus nerve’s role in regulating the parasympathetic system, further enhancing the body’s capacity for restoration and balance.
